EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.

Additional Updates Reported Today

In other judicial developments:

  • A US district judge has halted efforts to reduce security grants to local governments that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The judge ruled the case was “another example” of linking government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of 350 national guard members to a major US city prior to the new year, coinciding with an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to take in dozens of individuals from the US in exchange for additional aid, after signing a formal agreement with Washington.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit to demand the stripping of a political figure’s name from a prominent performing arts center in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil align with a wider ideology in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, drawing comparisons with past foreign policy strategies.
