Users Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research suggests that individuals who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals buying such drugs must be aware of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a return to original weight in about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The research, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Experts believe the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Accounts

Individuals who have stopped the jabs report a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you become extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Use

Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is higher among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural management.
